Meet the Chicks!

Posted by Mrs. Moosicorn on 05 Aug 2011 / 4 Comments

We had a little photo shoot today with the chicks. Accompanied with their photo is history of the breed. Although some of these breeds are considered dual-purpose birds (eggs and meat), we are raising them for eggs alone. We chose heritage breeds to support genetic diversity in our food supply. What are heritage breeds and [...]

Chicks!

Posted by Mrs. Moosicorn on 03 Aug 2011 / 3 Comments

Our baby chickens are here and they are ridiculously cute! We have two of each of these heritage breeds: Buff Orpington, Partridge Plymouth Rock, Silver Laced Wyandotte, Black Silkie Bantam, Buff Brahma Bantam. We constructed the brooder using scrap wood. The sheet covering the bedding is meant to keep the young chicks from ingesting too [...]

Chicken Edumacation

Posted by Scott on 01 Aug 2011 / 6 Comments

Our baby chicks will show up this week and we are VERY excited about it.  This first batch will all be egg layers, but if we’re ever going to make it to 50% of our own food production, we figured meat birds would probably figure into the equation at some point.  Our friends Ryan and [...]

Posted by Mrs. Moosicorn on 16 Jul 2011 / 2 Comments

The birds around our house have become pretty comfortable with us. They wait longer and longer to fly away when we come close…sometimes they stay on the feeder as I’m carrying it away to fill it! Last week on a whim, I walked out to the bird feeder and offered my finger to a pine [...]

Garden Update

Posted by Mrs. Moosicorn on 15 Jul 2011 / 1 Comment

We started our Irish Eyes seeds indoors in early March. Before long, they were overflowing the seedling trays, so we moved them to bigger containers. We bought some black plastic pots made specifically for the purpose, but we also used containers from our recycling like yogurt and sour cream. Washed and with a few small [...]

Chicken Coop Construction

Posted by Scott on 06 Jul 2011 / 4 Comments

This was a busy busy weekend working on the chicken coop.  Friday at 8:00am the chicken enclosure and coop looked just like this… After a quick run to the lumber yard I came back with 3 pieces of decking and 100 standard 2×4′s.  The decking went on quickly and by 10:00am I was building trusses [...]
