Shout out on the Outage

Use What You’ve Got

January 2012

The Outage is a site focusing with the slogan: “Escape, for good. Build a new life around simple pleasures: food and friend and field.” We were honored when Moosicorn was featured. The story sums up the journey at Moosicorn and highlights a recurring theme: using what we’ve got.

Moosicorn Photo Featured on MNN

Photo chosen as one of best animal photos of December

December 2011

Mother Nature Network (MNN.com) featured a photo we took of a bird called a common redpoll in their slide show of “best animal photos.” The photo was taken on our front deck this December. “A female common redpoll, a cold-hardy bird belonging to the finch family, takes a break from chowing down on bird seed…” To see the post on Mother Nature Network, click here.

MNN is “is the leading resource for daily environmental news, green commentary and simple steps to save money, stay healthy, and support the planet.” (MNN.com)

Moosicorn Ranch in Yes! Magazine Online

Young farmers: a growing movement

November 2011

An article by Fran Korten in Yes! Magazine used a photo of our very first (and very small) carrot grown here at Moosicorn Ranch. She writes, “I think that just five years ago the 20-somethings in our office were not longing to own a farm. Something in our culture is changing. A growing segment of people don’t want to just buy organic, healthy food. They want to grow it. This new lust to farm seems to cross class, race, and politics.” To read the full article, visit yesmagazine.org.

Fran Korten wrote this article for New Livelihoods, in the Fall 2011 issue of YES! Magazine.

A wonderful write up by 1001unicorns.com

October 2011

1001 Unicorns highlights non-profits, environmental news, human rights, eco-businesses and more. The article title, “Die Verwirklichung Eines Traums,” translates to “The Realization of  Dream.” The author writes, “Moosicorn is a magical place…wild and romantic.” I love that this didn’t translate: “The Muellers are not filzhaarigen hippies…”

The article can be viewed in English via translators. If you use Chrome, it should automatically ask you if you want it translated.

Part 2 of Down to Earth NW Story

Couple continues effort toward self-sufficiency

July 2011

This is part 2 of Julie Schaffer’s Down to Earth Northwest story on Moosicorn Ranch. Here is an excerpt: “’There were times when I was just so sick of being cold and sitting in a camping chair. I just wanted to be comfortable,” she said. “But at the same time, it was wonderful to be outside all the time – you hear everything, smell everything, every movement of the wind – I wouldn’t have changed a thing.’” Read the whole story: Couple Continues Effort Toward Self-Sufficiency

Trex Deckscapes Magazine

Trex features Moosicorn Ranch in their new magazine

July 2011

We chose Trex decking for is its recycled content and the fact that it requires zero maintainance. Trex used our photos and wrote a story about our decision to use their product in their new publication, Deckscapes Magazine. Sadie is featured front and center!

Make Magazine Blog

Makezine.com writes about our pool table refurbishing

July 2011

Sean Michael Raegan of Makezine.com wrote a blog post about our antique pool table. The table, which is over 100 years old, was in need of some TLC. A new table would have been easier, but we decided to refurbish this August Jungblut antique. Its journey to our home is part of what makes it so special. Mentioned in 5 Gnomedex Recaps

Sustainable Geeks

August 2010

Following our presentation at Gnomedex 10, we were mentioned in 5 Gnomedex Recaps including: The Sense of Gnomedex by Frank Catalano via Tech Flash, Gnomedex 10 Recap by The Griffin Blog, The Cool and Not So Cool From Gnomedex by David Spark, Rural Sustainable Geeks by Michael Foley, and Live From Gnomedex by Paul Balcerak. And to our delight, we made it onto David Spark’s “Cool” list for getting “applause for really geeky stuff.” Spark says, “Scott and Alex Mueller, a couple that chose to move to a remote area of Washington to build a house and live a sustainable life, had a few problems and first moments: ‘We can’t make calls with our iPhone out in the woods, but that’s not the iPhone’s strong suit anyway.’ AND ‘Before we had flush toilets we had Internet access.’”

Speakers at Gnomedex Conference

“A technology conference of inspiration and influence”

August 2010

Gnomedex is a conference revolving around technology, social media and what tech holds in store for the future.  Since so much of what we do here at Moosicorn is shared on-line and is a facilitated through unique applications of new technology, we were asked to join them this year.  We discussed our approach to “modern homesteading.” We feel that technology isn’t the enemy of the Green and Homesteading movements. It was an honor to take part in the Gnomedex Conference’s 10th and final year.
