Dorking Chicks Update

Posted by Mrs. Moosicorn on 29 Apr 2012 / 2 Comments

Our Dorking chickens are ready to move outside. We’re working on finishing their outdoor enclosure. In the meantime, we’ve expanded the brooder and put panels across the top.

You might remember this one with the crazy hair. He/she is the mystery chick. We’ve named it “Roadrunner.”

And I’m happy to report that our sick chick seems to be doing better. We separated her because she was picked on (he other chickens pecked her neck raw). We put her in a dog kennel and gave her food, water with electrolytes and her own heat lamp. After we separated her, we noticed some odd behavior: she buries her head in her chest and then flips over. Although she still hangs her head constantly, the flipping behavior is diminishing. We’re hoping she fully recovers and can be re-introduced to the flock.

Your “Mystery Chick” looks to be either a Polish TopHat or a Crevecour…my guess is a Polish…they are great little birds…very active, lay medium sized, white eggs.
