Turns out, it wasn’t a Kestrel… it’s a Merlin. Thanks John (a.k.a. Dendroica), for correcting me when Al wasn’t around to do so! :)
I was lucky enough to be working from home today and caught Gordon making a new friend in a rarely seen visitor to Moosicorn Ranch, a Kestrel Merlin. They bonded over their mutual interest in hunting little defenseless song birds and striking fear into the hearts of mice. Here they are hangin’ out.

A little closer…

And now for a closeup…

What a pretty animal!
My understanding is that Merlin can take many shapes…
Hmmmm… perhaps I’m wrong. Really smart birding buddy from the internet suggests that this may be a Merlin instead. I need Al to confirm these things.
Stay tuned.
