Just a quick tip…
I never grew up with a fireplace in the home. Now that we’ve seen temps down to -18*F I’m very glad we decided to include a wood burning stove in the Barn/House.
As we were shopping for fireplace implements we received a great bit of advice from Randy (a guy who helped me with many of the interior projects). In his somewhat back-woodsy style, he recommended we use welding gloves instead of the typical over-sized fireplace tongs and random poker things. They take up less room, cost less than fireplace tools and give you way more control when manipulating wood, coals, etc… I highly recommend them.

Yeah, the gloves don’t really replace the shovel. We use a broken off piece of roof flashing for a shovel and keep it with a tin bin for storing ashes before throwing them out. Because… apparently only WE can help prevent forest fires. Which is a shame, cause I think more folks should chip in some effort.
They also make great oven mitts, though you might want to shake the ashes off before handling food.
