Week 8 Update

Yet another eventful week at Moosicorn Ranch! I’ll start with an update on the Chipmunk-Dog War. The chipmunks seem to be winning as they continue to expanded their territory more and more into Sadie’s previously defined turf. Their most notable recent conquest has been claiming the interior of the house. Yes, chipmunks in the building. Conflict continues with no real end in sight.

In other rodent news, there is a gray mouse in the recycle bin that seems to have an affinity for Belgian ales. There’s a mouse in my beer, eh!

Inside, the barn is making steady progress. We passed our plumbing and electrical inspections. Yeah! To give ourselves a break, we hired out the insulation installation. We chose the recycled, bio-based insulation, EcoBatt. It is made of recycled and renewable materials and it smells like marshmallows :) Blog post coming soon with more info on the product.

Coming from the west side of the state, a major part of Eastern Washington’s appeal to us is the dryer climate. That said, it’s been raining nonstop! But the Seattle-like weather has awakened fungi all over the property which means a whole new group of fun organisms for me to photograph and identify!

Despite the wet weather, all through the forest, the birds are carrying on with their usual spring/summer activities including having babies. Everywhere I look, my eyes seem to find a nest.

And lastly we met some more of our neighbors (pictured below). Great community!

Your mouse story reminds me of a campfire song my family enjoys singing. The lyrics go like this:

“Oh the liquor was spilled on the bar room floor and the bar was closed for the night.

So the mouse crept in through the hole in the wall and sat in the pale moon light.

He licked up the liquor ’till the floor was dried and back on his haunches (sp?) he sat.

And all night long you could hear him ROAAAAARRRRR, ‘BRING ON THE GOSH DARN CAT!’”

It makes me smile. :) Thanks for posting pictures.
