The sliding door was left open a crack today when a house wren decided to take a shortcut through the building. Unfortunately, the back window was not open. He crashed into it and fell to the ground. The little guy was definitely stunned and we worried that he wouldn’t recover.

Hoping for the best, we scooped him up and placed him in a box on the deck. He was understandably still a little shaken and so he didn’t hop out of my hand for a few minutes.

Soon though, he began to feel better. He straightened up and started to look around a bit.

Then he took flight…

But he didn’t go far. He landed on our window and surveyed the scene. We knew he must be feeling more like himself because his tail returned to the characteristic tipped up stature of a wren.

Then he darted over to the deck railing, chattered a bit and flitted off. A happy ending for the house wren.

Here is a short video of the House Wren saying goodbye. Well, I’m going to hope he was saying, “thank you and goodbye,” but he may have been saying, “damn you for building a house in my flight path!” Either way, I’m glad he survived…
