Power

Posted by Scott on 26 Jan 2009 / 0 Comment

power-pedEventually we would like for Moosicorn to produce 80%+ of its own power through solar and wind technologies. We will use a net metering system and build these into the infrastructure later on in the experiment. In the meantime, we had to run power the old fashioned way. To save some costs and minimize the impact on the land, we chose to do the trenching ourselves. By doing so we used a smaller piece of equipment than Avista, the utility company, would have, and we could use the same machine to trench for the phone line that same weekend. 800 feet for the power trench, 3 feet deep. 1600 feet for the phone trench, 18 inches deep. 2400 feet took 21+ hours of over 2 days of trenching, trenching, trenching…

Once the trench is dug… it’s time to lay conduit and fill the trench in.

After this, I installed a power pole and breaker box with an outdoor GFCI, then Avista came to do their thing and finally the power is in!

Here are the paperwork details and associated costs:

Avista Estimate [$2,423.50]

Trenching Rental Bill [$934.20]
